Severe Hypoglycemia: Glucagon & Emergency Steps

A blood sugar below 54 mg/dL is a severe low—act immediately to prevent confusion, seizures, or unconsciousness.

  • If unable to swallow safely (confused, seizing, or unconscious): Give glucagon now and call emergency services.
  • If awake and able to swallow: give ~15 g fast carbs, recheck in ~15 minutes, repeat until out of danger.
  • Prepare: keep glucagon accessible and make sure someone nearby knows how to use it.
  • After the event: seek medical care as needed and let your healthcare team know. Review your plan to prevent future severe lows.
You shouldn’t give food or drink to someone who is unconscious—use glucagon and call for help.
